Rwanda’s coffee journey is one of rapid transformation. Once overlooked, the country now boasts one of Africa’s most dynamic specialty coffee sectors, thanks to investments in infrastructure, zoning reforms, and an expanding cooperative network. Coffee here is grown exclusively by smallholders, who now benefit from a more structured system of dedicated washing stations and agronomic support. Coffees from Rwanda—especially those from high-altitude zones like Kinini—are renowned for their elegant acidity, bright citrus and stone fruit profiles, and a clean, tea-like finish. This cup captures Rwanda’s modern renaissance: collaborative, resilient, and bursting with potential.

This lot is a Natural-processed Bourbon grown between 1800–2200 meters above sea level in the volcanic soils near Tumba and Mageragere. The high elevation and cool climate slow the coffee cherry’s maturation, concentrating sugars and deepening complexity. Once harvested, cherries are sun-dried whole, coaxing out sweet and tangy layers. The result is a syrupy, fruit-forward cup: brown sugar and kumquat open the profile with warm brightness, toffee rounds it out with rich sweetness, and a crisp finish of yellow apple adds clarity and lift. The careful attention to drying and sorting ensures a clean natural profile that balances indulgence with precision.

The Kinini Cooperative was born from an audacious dream. Led by Jacquie Turner and Malcolm Clear, this project began not with coffee, but with education—building a school for children affected by the genocide. As their bond with the community deepened, Jacquie and Malcolm envisioned a future powered by something more sustainable. So they planted coffee—not just trees, but opportunity. Partnering with local farmers, 85% of whom are women, they offered seedlings, training, and infrastructure. The Kinini Washing Station became a symbol of what’s possible when long-term impact, not charity, is the goal. Today, these growers—many first-time coffee producers—are crafting lots scoring 87+ points, proof that intentional support and shared ownership can produce exceptional results.
