Ethiopia
is the birthplace of coffee — a land where legend and agriculture intertwine.
In the southern region of Sidama, the
combination of high elevation (up to 2100 MASL), cool mountain air, and rich
soil creates ideal conditions for slow-growing, flavor-rich beans. Coffees from
this region are celebrated for their floral elegance, berry-forward profiles,
and soft, tea-like finishes — a sensory reflection of Ethiopia’s vibrant coffee
heritage.
This particular lot is a Natural-processed offering from Bekele’s farm, where ripe coffee cherries are
sun-dried whole, allowing the fruit’s sugars and flavors to infuse the bean.
The result is a cup that bursts with deep, jammy notes of blueberry, blackberry, and
concord grape, wrapped in a velvety texture. Processing takes place over nearly
two weeks, drawing out the coffee’s complexity while maintaining clarity and
balance. The final cup speaks gently of fermentation, allowing the inherent
fruitiness of the heirloom variety to shine
Nestled in the highlands of Sidama,
Ethiopia, where misty mornings give way to golden afternoons, Bekele Kachara has
spent over two decades nurturing his 4.5-hectare farm in Bensa. A steward of
the land and its rich traditions, Bekele works alongside his family to
cultivate indigenous heirloom coffee trees using sustainable, organic-inspired
methods. With a practiced eye, he hand-selects only the ripest cherries, dries
them carefully on raised beds beneath a canopy of shade, and honors the slow
rhythm of nature in every step of the process.
